bipolar 3 year old

adopted 16 year old daughter with bipolar throwing uncontrolable temper tantrums?
im 49 years old, married, with a grown 25 year old son. a year ago, my husband and i adopted a girl from a bad backround with severe bipolar disorder. she has always had her ups and downs, but has always been sweet and well behaved. recenlty though she has been throwing the worst tantrums i have ever witnessed. for hours, she will lay on the ground, scream until her vouice is gone and is gagging, kicking and scratching herself. shes been in the hospital 3 times this year, outpateint treatment centers and has been in counseling but its a whole different scenario when your dealing with it at home. its scary. any advice on how to deal would be greatly appriciated.
ive tried everything in my power to try and comfort her during her tantrums. i try and hold her, talk to her, just sit with her, and i can just never can help calm her down..any advice on how to comfort her, keep her safe during these outbursts?
Changing hormones can be hell when dealing with any mental illness. I was diagnosed w/ Bipolar 8 yrs ago during my early teens, and for over 2 years my doctor was constantly having to adjust my medication levels. I agree with the comments that suggest having her re-evaluated. Finding a really great doctor who can get her on the right combination of meds can be quite difficult, but ask around for recommendations. Specifically for psychiatrists who work well with teens.
