A person with bipolar disorder usually goes through periods of mania followed by periods of depression. These periods of happiness and sadness are not episodes normal happiness and sadness that everyone experiences from time to time. Instead, these episodes are intense and can be classified as severe mood swings. Symptoms of mania associated with – rapid speech and thoughts, amplified energy deprivation of sleep, elevated mood and inflated confidence, increased physical activity and mental undue irritability, aggressive behavior, impatience and a lack of opinion, irresponsible behavior such as over spending, decision-making rash, erratic driving, difficulty concentrating and exaggerated idea of his own importance. Symptoms of depression include loss of interest in daily activities, long out, sad mood or irritability, loss of energy or fatigue, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, sleeping too much or inability sleeping, drop in grades and inability to concentrate, inability to experience pleasure in anything, loss of appetite or overeating, anger, worry, anxiety and thoughts of death or suicide.
In adults, the phase of mania or depression can last weeks or months. In children and adolescents, these episodes can be for a shorter period, and a child or adolescent may n back and forth between mania and depression during the day. Episodes of mania or depression may happen irregularly and follow a pattern variable or may be linked to a manic episode after a period of depression, or vice versa. For example, mania in spring may be followed by depression in winter.
Between episodes, a person with bipolar disorder often returns to normal operation. In many people, rest period although there is little or no relationship between cycles, the cycles of mood change slowly or rapidly, with rapid cycling between mania and depression more common in women, children and adolescents.
Some people with bipolar disorder turn to alcohol and drugs because they feel better when they are high. However, the use of alcohol and drugs can have disastrous consequences for people with bipolar disorder. Substance abuse can actually make the bipolar disorder symptoms worse, doing the hard condition of the doctors to diagnose.
