3. Anticonvulsant medications – this is usually given to patients who have rapid cycling bipolar with mixed episodes of mania, depression and those who have suffered from substance abuse. Three antiseizure medications given are: carbamazepine, lamotrigine and oxcarbazepine.
4. Electroconvulsive therapy – ordered the patients suffering from acute emotional stages.

There are side effects with the drug, like anything else. Some of these may include: weight gain, high cholesterol, diabetes. A diet should be followed and education on dietary intake is necessary. This may help in reducing these effects.
