Seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat hallucinations, delusions and confusion caused by psychotic disorders, such as disorder bipolar and schizophrenia. The atypical antipsychotics are not SSRIs (selective inhibitors of serotonin reuptake) or benzodiazepines. Atypical antipsychotics as Seroquel affect only certain parts of the brain, blocking the entry of serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, histamine, and muscarine. The benefit to the antipsychotic atypical is that they are not habit-forming and are not as frequently abused as normal antipsychotics.
Some less serious side effects of Seroquel are dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, constipation, dry mouth and weight gain. The most serious side effects are allergic reactions that manifest themselves through breathing problems, sore throat, lips, tongue or face, and urticaria. Other effects are spastic movements of limbs and face or fever, muscle stiffness or beats irregular heartbeat. However, serious side effects of Seroquel include pancreatitis, hyperclycemia, stroke and three times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes.
In addition, some patients on Seroquel have developed Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS). Although the mortality rate for people with NMS has decreased, it remains a serious condition that results in respiratory failure, cardiovascular collapse, myglobinuric renal failure, arrhythmias, rhabdomyolysis, pneumonia, seizures or diffuse intravascular coagulation.
In addition, AstraZeneca, maker of Seroquel, has been charged with promoting drug for off-label use that violated FDA restrictions.
