there are several people in my family who are bi-polar, and yes, they have to stay on medication for life. the reason that they are bi-polar is because their brains do not make enough of a specific chemical. that has to be corrected with medication. this not a disease that can never be cured but can be controlled with medications, and people can lead happy and productive lives.
