bipolar having children

Are there any laws to protect parents who have AD-HD/Bipolar children as far as missing work is concerned?
Someone I work with has two children who have some serious mental health issues and she has to miss a lot of work to take them to appointments and things like that that cannot be scheduled during evenings and weekends and has no one else available to transport them. She’s afraid of getting in trouble for her attendance. Is there any laws or anything that can help her? She has asked one of the children’s dr to write up something for fmla but they said they couldn’t do that since it was for a child and not for her personally.
The appointments – I think anyway – are for counseling and for medication management (approximately 2-4 appts per month). Not to mention when she has to miss work due to their behavior in school.
there really isnt….ADHD and Bipolar CAN be treated with medication. i personally have ADD my brother has ADHD and a past friend of mine was Bipolar (who had a REALLY bad case of it). none of us had to go through any extensive appointments. so its hard to say but i dont think her working place will have any sympothy.
