Bipolar disorder is a mental illness characterized by extreme mood swings. It is inevitable that you or your loved one will go into a manic episode at some point, so it must have a plan in place.

Here is an example of a manic episode security plan that can be placed in the refrigerator or other place where it can be easily seen:

Bipolar Manic Episode Safety Plan

• STAY SAFE (however you have to)-remain in their safety zone. If you are at home, you can not go on a spending spree!

• Do not be alone, if possible (to be around someone who is aware of the symptoms manic bipolar disorder and may help control).

• Be accountable to someone – as their defender – who is known to be in one episode, is ensure that you take your medicine, and sit and listen to you, especially since one of the main symptoms of a manic episode is that we talk so much!

• If you can not find someone to talk to, no Internet chat rooms, where others experience episodes of bipolar mania understands how it feels.

• Be sure to take their medication and on schedule, and appointments with your doctor, psychiatrist and therapist.

• Do not take any decision important, or even any other aspect of minor importance (if you can help).

• Control your spending! The best way to do this is to have your follower card holding the charge and take control of the checking account.

• Can not sleep much, but this is one of the symptoms of a bipolar manic episode. There is things you can do about it – talk to your psychiatrist, therapist or doctor. It may be a temporary problem due to mania, and you may be able to get a temporary medicine to help you sleep.

• Take care of personal needs (toileting, eating, exercising, sleeping, etc.).

• Stop (never too hungry, angry, lonely or tired).

• While this can be difficult when you feel manic, trying to do what you normally enjoy (read, watch TV / movies, go to your support group, etc.)

• Make every effort to stop himself (take a bath, read, listening to soft music, walking, gardening yoga, meditation, journal, etc.).

• Remember the deceptive nature of their thoughts and feelings during a manic episode, and they tend to be higher than normal in nature.

• Do not go ahead with major plans tend to have during a manic episode, especially those who believe they have come from "special insight" that you have received during their hobby.

• Do not take any action in impulsive thoughts you may have to risk behaviors.

• Note that this is just a situation temporary and do nothing to permanent consequences.

• Tell yourself that "this too shall pass", "I've been here before and have gotten through it, "and any positive thought you can use to replace your negative thoughts.

• You may have thoughts paranoid that others are out to "get" you. These are not real, and are only the result of his bipolar manic episode.

• Remember: paranoid thoughts are temporary only when you are in a bipolar manic episode.
