Manic depression can be defined as an extended stage of mood swings. One may experience these mood swings from very high to very low grade. The high degree known as manic and the lower as depressed.

Bipolar disorder is another name for manic-depressive illness. This stage usually refers to as the state of mind of a person who moves between different poles "of mania and depression.

Manic Depression is not something to take lightly. It is a disorder serious and needs serious professional and personal attention.

Manic depression can affect both men and women. There is no specific age at which this disease usually starts. However, experts believe that the emergence of this disease occurs in late adolescence.

This disorder is between persons irrespective of age, race, social classes and ethnic groups. Medical experts believe that this disease has a genetic link and even tends to run in families.

The disease not only affects the patient but also the person who assists him or her. The immediate family is known to suffer greatly. Here are some of the symptoms of regarding the disorder:

a) less amount of sleep needed.

b) Increased energy, restlessness, increased activity

c) Bad Case; euphoria (too high); Spending sprees

d) The abuse of drugs including cocaine, sleeping pills and alcohol

e) Changing from one idea to another often

f) Tendency to be easily distracted, and inability to concentrate, extreme irritability

g) To talk fast; Racing thoughts

h) Aggressive behavior, intrusive behavior, provocative

i) Unrealistic beliefs in their abilities and skills; Denial that anything is wrong

j) lasting period of behavior that is very different from the usual

The symptoms of low or "depressing" phase of manic-depressive illness:

a) Thinking about death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts

Restlessness b), irritability

c) Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism end

d) Sleeping too much, inhibits sleep or insomnia

e) Difficulty concentrating, poor memory

Lack f) of energy, loss of interest in leisure activities

g) Change in appetite, weight loss without any effort, weight gain

h) Difficulty in making decisions, a feeling of fatigue

i) feelings of guilt, feelings of futility: a feeling of powerlessness

j) chronic pain symptoms in the body not as a result of injury or illness

k) the mood of long duration in a bad mood, empty mood, anxiety lasts a long time

– Causes

There are several causes of manic depression. Here is A list of some of the causes that lead to manic depression:

a) the genetic factor

As noted above, depression manic tends to run in families. The chromosomes tend to show genetic abnormalities.

b) the rapid biological clock

The hypothalamus, the center of the brain is a super fast biological 'clock'. The clock is actually a small group of nerves called the supra chiasmatic nucleus or SCN. This works towards regulation of an individual cycle of daily life and affect wakefulness and sleep.

Neurotransmitters c)

Patients in the Manic depression is known to have higher levels of vesicular monoamine transporter. It is a protein in the brain known to regulate neurotransmitters.

Other causes include abnormal brain activity and infectious agents like viruses.
