Depression is now recognized by the physician as a potentially serious medical condition. Gone are the days when he dismissed the symptoms of depression as "imaginary" or "self-pity." Major Depression – Judging by the severity and number of symptoms of this disease, this would be considered the most serious of all types of the disease. People suffering from this type of depression may or may not have suicidal tendencies.
Uncategorized – There are studies being done in other types of symptoms that are not yet classified by medical research, but have not yet accumulated enough information to be placed into any particular category.
Also There are at least four million people suffer from a type of depression known as "treatment resistant". These are people who have tried everything, drugs, therapy, shock treatments, whatever, but all have proved innefective.
Medical science is now in the early stages of experimentation a surgical procedure in people who feel that all other options have failed and are desperate enough to try the surgery as a "last resort". This type of surgery involves drilling holes in the patient's head and placing electrodes in a brain area known as "Area 25". A pacemaker is placed on the chest of people and the cables running from the chest to the electrodes in the brain.
As noted above, this surgery is in the early stages and is definitely not without risk, such as infection or stroke.
If successful, the manufacturer of pacemakers, Medtronic, is potentially make billions of dollars of sales of these devices. This could change the lives of many people who have been suffering for most or all their lives.
