What happens in the counseling process? Is it so mysterious?

Does the counselor to keep the secrets of ancient wisdom, pills and potions? No.

I remember a book about short-term or solving counseling written by Steve DeShazer I've read maybe 30 years ago, where Clients were asked during their first session, "What has changed since you call for an appointment?"

Change is the essence counseling experience. An individual decides that for now have to revert to an external source of resources for a cognitive problem or feeling, or behavior.

(In fact, Sharon Begley, answers this question in her book Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain, "Is it really possible to change the structure and function of the brain, and with it alter the way we think and feel? The answer is a resounding yes.)

And often, once an individual makes a telephone call to schedule an appointment, change begins to occur, the problem begins to crumble.

Depending on the theoretical orientation of the counselor, the model to use, the actual session this could go in any number of directions, perhaps cognitive behavioral or rational emotive behavior therapy, which are models that work with self-talk, or psychodrama, could be used is an experimental model, or the solution-oriented brief therapy, and a problem of addiction or sexual abuse problem using different techniques.

Whatever the model, the counselor and client to discuss the problem and objectives, and set some goals.

The non-critical and listen thoroughly carried out by a consultant allows the customer to talk about something that has been troubling, and human validation of non-critical and background listening is a key factor for the client in the search for emotional relief.

Relief that occurs inside the body, of course, and reflects neuroplastic changes in the brain.

Neuroplasticity is the ability of the human brain that we are beginning to understand, and I think teaching our customers about neuroplasticity and how to improve it a key part of the counseling process.

One of my mentors in this field, many years ago told me that "the teaching of the road map was very important to customers.

In a sense, clients need to know they are not outliers, well beyond the norm, and the teaching of the road map is a piece key to this part of the counseling process.

Technology has added some interesting insights about human experience and has added some tools interesting to exchange our tool box.

We now can work your brain to keep the brain, and we can use biofeedback to train brain waves that can cycle from 15 to 42 cycles per second, or heart rate variability can be trained, which could mean that we are maintaining homeostasis Internal 60 times per minute.

Attending to my thoughts about my life and my physiology that often makes the transition easier, because I think I can adjust I thought a feeling quickly in small increments, as the adjustments I make to my car as it directs on the road.

If you stop to think about how handle, which assists many variables quickly and frequently and constantly adjusting the vehicle speed and position on the road.

I that the counseling process is.

Consciousness offers a choice. The Department of neuroplasticity processes and Sharon Begley has written a wonderful book, "Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain", only one of many emerging these days, about our brain and how it can change.

In this particular case, the change is in the brains of meditating Buddhists and fMRI have shown that the brains of meditators have changed according to its practice of particular type of meditation, compassion.

The counseling process change occurs in the same way, through connections neuroplastic changes neuronal and stimulate neurogenesis, or growth of new brain cells.

As a domestic violence educator, I find my court ordered customers are very open to this type of counseling process, knowledge transfer.

And the rest of us can carry out the powers of fitness in our own brain by using biofeedback or exercise programs for computerized brain and begin the process neuroplastic neurogenesis.

Since customers demonstrate change, a large part of my job is to recognize it, and literally shouted congratulations.

Play, share knowledge, encouragement and work in the counseling process.

Those are the arcane and mysterious secrets of the counselor.
