The Canadian teen suicide statistics are alarming. Between 1952 and 1992 the national suicide rate increased by 78%. but by comparison the teen suicide rate over the same period increased 600%. If any disease or bacteria that is causing an alarming increase in the number of deaths that would surely be considered an epidemic.

Women represent 75% of suicide attempts, usually by drug overdose. But men are really six times more likely to succeed and to choose more violent methods such as shooting or hanging. About a third of teenage suicides are made by young people who have tried before.

Suicide rates are five to seven times higher for adolescents of other young First Nations in Canada. Suicide rates among Inuit youth are among the highest anywhere in the world. They are 11 times higher than the national average in Canada.

Whoa is at risk for suicide?

Most of the signs of suicidal thoughts or feelings are similar to symptoms of depression. Adolescents who are lonely, rejected, hopeless and are at risk. Alcohol or drug problems and parental discord (separation or divorce) definitely can play a role in adolescent depression. Adolescents who have altered brain chemical issues, such as bi-polar disorder, are at higher risk.

Watch for these signs.

You can not always know what's going on inside the head of a teenager, but you can see some outward signs of what's going on emotionally. An obsession with death, poems, stories or pictures that represent death, irrational, bizarre behavior, a sudden change in personality or appearance, a change in eating or sleeping habits; significant decline in school performance, giving away their belongings, apparent sense of shame or guilt – these are all things to see are signs that a teen is contemplating suicide.

Talk help

Talking about suicide will not increase the likelihood that adolescents will proceed with intention. If you think someone you know is considering suicide should talk to them about it.

This is what we can say:

"You sound very depressed and sad. Is thinking of harming (or killing yourself)? "

If the person answers yes to the question about how they intend to do so. Keep person to talk and reassure those who feel that way is not a permanent condition.

A teenager who commits suicide is not the intention of dying. He only wants the suffering to end. He can not talk about how he feels or just make the bad thoughts are going to think positive things. He is depressed.

People need to help and support suicide, but they also need professional help. If your friend was bleeding or suffering from an acute infection that would not want to leave it unattended and to help them obtain medical care.

If you or someone you know is thinking suicidal thoughts go to seek help from their parents, a teacher or a trusted adult.

Most communities have suicide or crisis hotline that you can phone and speak to someone about how you feel. You can even call this number for help in dealing with a friend who is suspected bomber.

Reaching for help in situations potential teenage suicide is the first step on the road to healing.
