bipolar overdiagnosed
Has anybody out there been wrongly diagnosed with bipolar?
A recent Brown University study showed 50% of those diagnosed with bipolar shouldn’t have been. The doctors overdiagnosed. Are there discussion groups or blogs I can check out for people wrongly diagnosed? I want to hear these people’s stories.
I am a mental health professional and I will tell you that Bipolar Disorder is very much overdiagnosed. Only 1-2% of the entire population actually has Bipolar disorder.
I do a lot of independent evaluations for people that were diagnosed elsewhere by someone else, usually their psychiatrist, family doctor, or counselor. Whenever I see someone with the diagnosis of Bipolar, I start to do some deep investigating and testing. I can estimate that about 50-75% of the people that I see that are previously diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder don’t actually meet the criteria. I’ve started to ask, “Why did your doctor diagnose you will Bipolar?” and they will reply, “Because one minute I’m fine and the next minute I’m angry.” And then I’ll say, “That’s not Bipolar.” Then I’ll start to ask them about the specific symptoms of Bipolar and most of the time, the only symptom they have is irritability. It is incredibly frustrating and since some of the people I see are for independent disability evaluations, they become mad at me because I tell them that they are probably not Bipolar.
Honestly, I cannot believe the incompetence of some people that diagnose Bipolar and I hate saying that about my colleagues. I have reached the point in which I want to visit every single doctor in my county and train them on how to identify Bipolar.
