bipolar predisposition

It seems like about every child I meet these days has been diagnosed with ADHD – Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder – also known as ADD – Attention Deficit Disorder. So common, in fact, affecting up to 12% of school age children.
The problem, however, is that the symptoms (behaviors) are often found in many children and adults, making it more difficult to diagnose a truly authentic disorder requiring treatment, including medication prescription.
For example, symptoms of ADHD (where there is an emphasis on the attention deficit) may include:
– Difficulty sustaining attention in work or play activities.
– Difficulty following instructions.
– There seems to be listening.
– Often lost items needed for activities at home or school.
– Is disorganized.
– Not paying attention to detail.
– It distracts easily.
– He forgets things.
– Has difficulty with tasks that require advance planning.
What children (and adults) not have some or even most, of these behaviors? (I can almost hear my wife checking these out of me!) What is ADHD, however, is a child who has at least six of the symptoms.
There is also another variant of the disorder that involves a tendency to hyperactivity / impulsivity. A child with this type of ADHD have at least six of the following symptoms and behaviors:
– It is usually restless.
– Can not play quietly.
– Is always in motion.
– You can not sit still.
– Has worrying awaiting their turn.
– Constantly interrupts others.
– Talks more than usual.
– Answer the words / answers.
– Runs or climbs to inappropriate times.
Again, that could easily make a case that behavior is very common in children who are simply prone to excess and lack of energy well developed social skills and behavior. So let's see some more.
What causes ADHD, what is not, and how to diagnose
ADHD is caused by the lack of chemicals in key areas of the brain of a child. These chemicals, when produced in sufficient quantity are responsible for thinking and organizational skills. Without enough of these chemicals are produced, the organization of brain centers that simply do not work very well.
A major cause of ADHD is a genetic predisposition. In other words, ADHD is more common in children who have relatives Nearby, with the disorder. However, scientific study has also shown a link between ADHD and smoking and substance abuse during pregnancy.
What does not cause ADHD? While the following may contribute to hyperactivity and / or lack of attention, research has shown that the disorder does not cause ADHD:
– Too much or too little sugar
– Aspartame (aka, Nutrasweet)
– Coloring Food Additives
– Allergies
– Lack of vitamins
– Too much TV or video games
– Fluorescent lights
– Poor parenting
If you suspect that your child may have ADHD, consult your family doctor and / or someone who specializes in children with behavior problems. As mentioned previously, ADHD is difficult to diagnose and may require the entry of her son from a number of sources.
If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, the disease management approach will require team, with you, your child's teachers, doctors, counselors or therapists working together. Drugs are also a possibility, even with treatment, the parenting a child with ADHD is a demanding task.
Some measures you can take:
– Provide more structure and clear expectations / rules.
– Make plans with very specific time for daily tasks (getting up, eating, doing homework, playing, etc.).
– Make sure your instructions are heard and understood, such as children with ADHD may have difficulty understanding what is said.
– Work with your child develop social skills appropriate.
– Rewarding effort and positive behavior.
While children usually do not "outgrow" ADHD, its support, parents can help their children adjust and learn to live with the disorder. And these children, with understanding, supportive parents have the best chance of becoming well-adjusted adults.
