In psychiatry, bipolar disorder and manic depression falls into a group of mood disorders in which a person experiences emotional states those who go from being clinically depressed to the states in which their moods are elevated, or otherwise the cycle and may be or include both moods. When a patient has four or more episodes of depression or mood swings and a combination of mania in one year, are known to have Rapid Cycling Bipolar Disorder.
One patient with rapid cycling bipolar disorder can become a full cycle within hours or days. In bipolar disorder patients progressively move through the mood swings. They are extremely unstable and difficult to find the right treatment for each individual concerned. These females are more likely to rapid cycling.
Bipolar disorder is classified and divided into four types depending on the intensity and patterns:
1. Bipolar I Disorder – A patient has one or more of the combined cycle, with at least one or more long episode of depression. The most serious of all the ways are extreme manic episodes.
2. Bipolar II – The presence of one or major depressive episode with at least one hypomanic episode. Depression is more intense than mania (which can last for at least four days). A person can be quite destructive, but may not be problematic.
3. Cyclothymic Disorder – softer than the bipolar II, several episodes of depression and mania, which are the acute phase, but less severe. Not as much as occur in bipolar disorder I or II, but could progress one of these at a later stage.
4. Bipolar disorder not otherwise specified – This is when a person experiences episodes of depression and mania that can not be classified under the conditions mentioned about, so a person can fully recover from it.
People should not consider this disorder as something terrible like leprosy, and wash their hands of the sick. They must learn to gain a better understanding that this disease can be treated and stabilized with the right medication. Also There are excellent treatment options available to make this condition more manageable so patients can live a normal life. They are able to take control again and have confidence.
