What causes schitzhos (Sp?) A hearing voices and seeing things?
I'm really curious about this. It's no fun pointing out to anyone. What happens in the brain that causes hallucinations and voices? Like what is the difference between someone with this, or bipolar disorder or clinical depression, for example?
There is no exact answer to this – do not think any person can point to an area of the brain and say, "No!" That is what is going wrong! " However, we know that people with schizophrenia are natural neurotransmitter levels of dopamine in the brain. It is still a debate about why they get their dopamine levels messy – some believe it is genetics, others blame environmental or drug abuse. We also know that when a person with schizophrenia has a hallucination hearing, the frontal lobes are active (of course), but so are the brain areas responsible for speech production, rather than understanding speech, as most would. In other words, when experiencing positive symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, etc.) the "normal" brain areas are active (ie, those active if they had a healthy brain and in fact the actual exposure to a stimulus) and other areas that show that your own brain produces hallucination. That's the best I can give you. Until more studies and fMRI were performed on people willing to different subtypes of schizophrenia, which know no more. The other disorders that are described can have other imbalances in neurotransmitters in the brain (such as serotonin or norepinephrine) that can contribute to their symptoms. Moreover, environment can also contribute greatly.
