How often is Bipolar MISDIAGNOSED?
Is there current statistics available?
How does one know if being misdiagnosed for Bipolar # 2?
What I’ve read is this: The first diagnosis is right only 1/3 of the time. Most people with bipolar take 8 years to be diagnosed with it, they are usually misdiagnosed with depression. For bipolar 2, I think the figure was 10 years or maybe it was 12. If you have had a very clear period of mania or hypomania, WITH MAJOR CHANGES IN SLEEP REQUIREMENTS, then it’s unlikely to be anything but bipolar ( mania or hypomania, usually you need only 4 or 5 hours of sleep, or much less, for weeks at a time – not insomnia, the 4 hours a night or less is all you want or need). Go to psycheducation.org and read dr. phelps book on bipolar II for free – he goes into a lot of stuff about diagnosis and “soft” bipolar.
