Will my health care provider insurance company extend benefits to my disabled daughter who is now an adult?
My daugher turned 18 and had to withdrawal from school due to disablity with Bipolar and BPD. She has applied for SSI. Can I ask my health care provider to keep her on my family plan?
There are very specific criteria that need to be met in order to meet “disabled dependent” requirements.
Your insurance company likely has a standard form that would need to be completed by her physician.
It couldn’t hurt to contact them and ask for a copy of the criteria and the form for her physician to complete.
However, I’m not sure I’d be terribly optimistic – I’ve not seen many insurance companies who will allow someone to continue as a dependent due to bipolar disorder. Again though, it couldn’t hurt to ask and complete the documentation, just in case your daughter does meet your particular insurer’s criteria.
