Lithium

Lithium is the most common and highest prescribed bipolar medications used to treat bipolar disorder. It remains the gold standard and is seen as the most effective drug in bipolar treatment. Though Tegretol typically is not used to treat depression, is an effective anti-drug mania or anti-manic. Controls and cases of psychotic episodes of mania, but its side effects include high levels of liver toxicity, blurred vision and nausea. It may also interfere with the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.

Trileptal Control Mania

Like Tegretol, Trileptal is used to manage episodes mania. However, it is as effective as Tegretol. That said, side effects are drastically reduced and less harmful to the liver as Tegretol. If you using oral contraceptives, be aware that Trileptal can interfere with its effectiveness.
