In the high-energy phase of bipolar disorder (called mania, or a manic phase), a person might feel unusually positive about things — or be very irritable or even enraged. The person often will have a lot of extra energy and might believe he or she can do anything, even fly. The person’s thoughts might race from topic to topic, which can make it difficult to sleep well. If the person’s mood then crashes, the person may feel very sad or irritable and might cry a lot. Things that were fun no longer seem interesting, and the person may feel very tired and unable to concentrate. The person may even feel worthless or that life isn’t worth living.
A person with bipolar disorder cycles from the manic phase to the depressive phase and has no control over it.
the cause isn’t fully understood, but doctors believe it has to do partially with inheritance and partially with an interaction of your genes.
Before there was medication, people with bipolar disorder often went untreated. Many decades ago, anyone with a severe mental illness was shunned by society.
Most people with bipolar disorder should see a doctor because medication and/or behavioral therapy are necessary to alleviate the painful symptoms of depression, and also manic episodes can be very dangerous to a person especially when they believe they are invincible and could end up hurting themselves.
