Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS Therapy System) is a 90-minute surgery out patient procedure. It can be done by a neurosurgeon, a vascular surgeon or ENT. The components of the surgery include the following:
 • A generator to provide adequate stimulation for the vagus nerve;
 • A lead that is attached to the generator and the vagus nerve;
 • associated equipment to help with necessary implantation surgery;
 • Equipment to help establish the parameters of stimulation, particularly for the patient;
 • The appropriate manuals and
 • magnets to suspend or manual stimulation induce
The implementation of the generator and lead patients is usually performed as an outpatient. The battery contained in this generator has a finite life, which varies depending on model, the stimulation parameters and settings used for each patient. At or near the end of the life of a battery, a patient may, with the advice of a doctor, decides to introduce a new generator, with or without replacing the original initiative.
Pulse generator. The pulse generator is an implantable, programmable signal generator designed to be coupled with the bipolar lead to deliver electrical signals the vagus nerve. The pulse generator is a device battery. Shortly before or battery depletion, the pulse generator can be eliminated and a new generator implanted in a brief outpatient procedure.
The Model 102, 102R, and DemiPulse ™ ™ Duo DemiPulse pulse generators VNS Therapy, the generators Pulse currently only offered in the U.S., are similar in design and manufacture of a cardiac pacemaker. The generator consists of a printed circuit board and a battery in a hermetically sealed titanium case. Standard components are mounted on printed circuit boards using surface mount technology. Mounted circuit boards are then tested and mounted with the battery in the case of titanium, which is laser welded. A header of the lead that connects is added bipolar and each unit is subject to final testing before being sterilized.
Bipolar Lead. The bipolar cable transmits the electrical signal from the pulse generator to the vagus nerve. The lead incorporates electrodes, which are self-sizing and flexible, minimizing mechanical trauma to the nerve and allow fluid exchange the body within the nerve structure. The two lead electrodes and the tether strap wrapping around the vagus nerve and the connector is tunneling subcutaneously to the chest, where it attaches to the pulse generator. Cables are available in two sizes of inner spiral diameter to ensure optimal placement of electrodes on nerves of different sizes.
Programming Wand and Software. Our programming wand and proprietary software are used to interrogate the device and transmit information programming from a handheld computer to the pulse generator via electromagnetic signals. Programming capabilities include modification of the parameters programmable pulse generator (pulse width, amplitude, frequency and interval of the OFF and ON) and storage and retrieval of telemetry data.
Tunneling tools. The tunnel is a tool for single use sterile disposable surgical tool designed for use during the Surgical placement of bipolar initiative. The tool is used for the subcutaneous tunnel of the Assembly of lead between the site of nerve in the neck and the generator site pulse in the chest.
Accessory Pack. The accessory package includes two assemblies used to test resistance device function before implantation, bipolar lead the tie-downs and hexagonal screwdriver.
Charles Donovan was a patient in the FDA investigational trial of vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for chronic or recurrent treatment-resistant depression. He was implanted with the vagus nerve stimulator in April of 2001. He chronicles his journey from the grips of depression thanks to vagus nerve stimulation therapy in his book:
Out of the Black Hole: The Patient’s Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression
His all inclusive book prepares depression sufferers to make an informed decision about this ninety-minute out-patient procedure. It is a “must read” before you discuss this treatment with your psychiatrist. A prescription for the procedure is required from an M.D. and it is covered by most insurance plans.
