Understanding Depression – a definition

There are two main schools of thought on the cause of depression. The first holds that depression is the result of chemical imbalances in the brain and advised treatment with antidepressant medications. Tricyclic antidepressants (Elavil ®), have fallen from grace, but still used. Selective inhibitors of serotonin reuptake (SSRIs), (Zoloft ®, Prozac ®, Paxil ®, Lexapro ®), is believed to work better with fewer side effects. For many patients, the combination of drugs in inhibiting serotonin and norepinephrine (SSNRI) appear to be a better option. If you just prescribe drugs rather than half of patients improve dramatically.

A second school argues that depression is the result of the ideas people have of themselves. The psychiatrist who advanced this theory account for most of these ideas in the hands of his patients were wrong, or only partially true. He developed a system called cognitive therapy to teach patients to recognize ideas that lead to depression, then to test a (workersxzcompxzkit) see how far they were true or partly true. Treatment based on the Cognitive therapy is usually of short duration, less than three months, and demand for work a little more traditional therapy. The therapist may ask the patient to indicate certain things during the week and be ready to discuss at the next meeting. If you just use this therapy in patients, about the same percentage as well as received either drug alone.

The combination of drugs and cognitive therapy, results in approximately half again as many people improve.

If symptoms are mild, intermittent, try reading Feeling Good: The New Therapy Mood, by David Burns, MD is a self-help book based on cognitive therapy that psychologists say "I have the right" – rare praise for self-help book. If evidence of bipolar disorder is defined as changes in mood of higher than normal energy and optimism to spells of depression, then, mood stabilizers may work better than antidepressants alone.

Cognitive distortions and testing of Truth

This easy to find evidence to support a false assumption. Want to believe the earth is flat? Go to Florida and look around, it looks flat. More proof? Go west to Texas and look around, it looks flat. Further evidence? Wow, you're a hard sell. Go to Manitoba and look around, but sure looks flat. It's only when you look for evidence that the world is not flat but the truth emerges – not flat!

Sometimes someone says: "Nothing I do is right. Everything I do goes wrong." And this person readily cites a lot of things messed support their views. If you look at them and say, "Wait a minute. His clothes are in right side out. His shoes are on the right foot. You drove here without kill anyone. What does all he does is wrong? "This can lead to cognitive distortion second," Oh, those are the little things. It is important that things mess. "One can respond to this statement by saying:" So it's important only if (workersxzcompxzkit) screw up? Is really makes sense? Have you ever tried to use the shoes on the wrong foot, perhaps more important than you think. Do not you think that the person did not kill, while he was driving here think is important? "

Found strengths and weaknesses of people are often on opposite sides of the same coin. They do what they are good, it might be better to try something else. This idea seems to function in depression. People are encouraged "being responsible" or "taking responsibility." But if people take responsibility for things beyond their ability to control, establishing that failure and depression. Depressed people often seem laudable in its desire to attempt to resolve the problems around them, but when it starts to hurt, it's time to stop smoking. It can be useful enough to remind oneself that one does not have to be perfect to be good, and often it is just that – pretty good. Many of the problems life can be addressed first ask "Who owns this problem?" If it really is not yours, do not volunteer!
