Children with ADHD or gifted child: You can make a world of difference!
I have a personal story to share with you. It is a story that at first you may not find that remarkable, but if you read on, I promise you will begin to understand the significant value of questions and self-belief and skills his son.
In the beginning …
When I started school in first grade, my parents had a problem with me from day one. I came home tired of my skull. Imagine that, a first grader who is bored with school and said they never would return.
After some phone calls, and a few laughs, it was determined that would be tested in the coming weeks to find what my academic skills. I still remember the test as if it were yesterday, and I certainly remember the result. I was a student identified as gifted. As a result, I was placed in a gifted and talented program, where encourages creativity and had the freedom and the freedom to try something wild.
Above all, now had confidence in my abilities. Now "knew" I had talent and could achieve anything I could put my mind too.
Outside of school …
After cabotage years through school, I faced a new reality, when I left my comfort zone. I moved to a new area of the country where nobody knew who I was, and nobody knew my story. Now they face new teachers, new supervisors and new teammates.
Despite my strong work ethic, I fairly quickly was labeled as a person with ADHD. My colleagues, my supervisors, and even some new friends saw me immediately with ADHD.
"Why, you may ask?
Back to my being identified as a talented student. Things came very easy for me. I was able to multi-task and as a result, I have accomplished many things, while others need more time.
But this came at a price. As a result of my many tasks, I also did a lot of careless mistakes. I moved quickly, and it cost me.
The difference:
What was so important about me being bored?
It is an indicator of inattention in ADHD, however, someone saw the potential in my abilities. Someone could look more beyond the initial presentation. Someone had faith in me. And as for careless mistakes, not just another sign.
However, people expect things me. I was supported and encouraged. I knew that my family and instructors believed in my abilities. Above all, I had the discipline and knew exactly what could and could not get away with it.
What you need to know:
- Medications can work, but also to cover up underlying problems.
- People respond and create realities from what they are told.
- The support and faith can make all the difference in the world. Advocate.
What you can do:
- Listen to the professionals.
- Question everything.
- Finding information.
- Learn.
- Offer support.
- They believe in the alternative or whatever it takes.
I'm suggesting that this is the case for everyone. ADHD does not exist, but is also a popular diagnosis, and most people have an opinion and think they know what is ADHD. Unfortunately, most people with an opinion, not those who should listen.
Imagine if we gave the gift of hope to all child? Imagine if we believed in the ability of our children instead of immediately labeled with ADHD.
