What diagnostic tool do UK psychiatrists use to diagnose bipolar?

I was once told that UK diagnosis of bipolar and American one are not the same. Is this the case? Seems a bit odd does that.

Whoever told you this might mean in terms of the wording of the diagnostic manuals. The two main manuals are the ICD-10 (World Health Organisation) and the DSM-IV-TR (American Psychiatric Association). Most of my psychiatric colleagues would probably favour the ICD-10. Whereas Clinical Psychologists tend to use the DSM-IV-TR. I think it’s just down to where you train. The core features of the disorders are essentially the same. It’s a bit like ADHD (which is a DSM-IV-TR term); the terminology in the ICD-10 is Hyperkinetic Disorder, yet the core features of the disorder are the same.
