Manic depression or bipolar disorder, is a type of mood disorder that goes beyond ordinary day UPS and downs. It is characterized by periodic episodes of extreme elation, elated mood or irritability countered by periodic, classic depressive symptoms.
It is a condition in which people have mood swings that are beyond what most people experience in their lifetime. These mood swings may be low, as in depression, or high, as in periods when one feels very excited. These high periods are known as "manic" phases. Many patients have phases of high and low, but some only experience depression or mania.
It is related to substance abuse, and includes a number of alterations in behavior and thinking that results in significant adjustment problems of life. This generally occurs in stages, where at one end is severe depression, which becomes moderate depression, and then becomes soft and changes in mood shortly that many call "the blues", then returns the normal mood, then hypomania and mania below.

These manic episodes are characterized by extreme irritability and distractibility, excessive feelings of euphoria, sustained periods of unusual behavior, with the assumption of significant risk, increased energy, activity, talking and quick thinking, agitation, decreased sleep, lack of trial, increased or decreased sex, substance abuse, provocative or offensive behavior, and denial of the problem.
The course of the disease varies from patient to patient. Without treatment, the frequency and severity of recurrent disease may increase with age.
