In the regular bipolar disorder, or manic-depressive patient cycles back and forth between mania and depression. These cycles can last from weeks to months a time, often with periods of normalcy in between.

Mania is characterized by euphoria, in overspending, increased risk behavior, increasing sexual behavior and impulsive actions. Depression is characterized by low mood, difficulty sleeping, and getting no pleasure in pleasurable activities.

Mixed bipolar disorder, however, is a little different. Instead of having long cycles of mania and depression, the patient experiences both moods at once.
