Disorder II Many people are familiar with the main types of bipolar disorder – bipolar disorder I and bipolar. However, like many people are familiar with other types of bipolar disorder: hypomania and cyclothymia.
If you have three or more of the following listed below most of the day – almost every day – for a week or more, you may have bipolar mania:
• excessive happiness (joy), hope, and emotion
• Sudden changes from being happy to be irritable, angry, and hostile
• Restlessness, increased energy and decreased need for sleep
• talk fast, talkative, interrupting the prayers of others
Distraction •
• Racing thoughts
• increased sexual desire
• Tendency to make grand plans and unattainable
• Tendency to show lack of criteria, such as deciding to leave a job
Inflation • Self-esteem or grandiosity – unrealistic beliefs in the ability, intelligence and competence, may be delusional
• Increased reckless behaviors (such as excessive spending, sexual risk behavior, substance abuse and / or ill-advised business decisions)
Hypomania is simply a lower intensity (severe) of mania. The person may appear to be in a better mood than usual, but do not show the extreme euphoria in a manic episode. May experience a greater sense of well being and feel as if more productive.
One problem for the person experiencing hypomania, however, is that you can fool to them. Hypomania can become full-blown mania, or you can fall into a depressive episode bipolar.
Cyclothymia is another type of bipolar disorder and, according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) American Psychiatric Association, a diagnosis of cyclothymia is based on the following:
1. Individual has had many periods of both hypomania and depression for a period of at least two years.
2. Individual has not experienced periods of normal mood lasting longer than two months.
3. Individual has not experienced major depression, manic or mixed episode during the first two years of symptoms
4. The symptoms are not attributable to schizophrenia or psychotic disorder
5. The symptoms are not due to the effects of drugs, illicit drugs or medical condition.
6. Individual experiences significant distress or impairment in daily life.
