"The House of Dave," a permanent supportive housing for people with mental illness, was created by Lin and Ron Wilensky. When non-compliance, the center Florida-profit organization opened in August 2008, was appointed to Lin Wilensky's brother Dave, who had struggled all his life schizophrenia.
After Dave died of heart failure in 2007, Lin and Ron prepared Dave House expects to be able to help people like Dave to find stability and support despite of the difficulties that go along with mental illnesses like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Dave had a long battle with schizophrenia, however, he finally found peace in a small house with two roommates and a mental health specialist who checked on him periodically. He spent the last 15 years of his life, and then passed to his sister wanted to create a supportive environment similar to others.
So the Wilenskys and created their own housing support for patients with mental illness in an average income of West Orange County neighborhood. In the home of Dave, Lakeside mental health workers visit the four men and two women living there a few times a week. They make everyone is taking their medication, that people are taking, and that the house is clean and in good condition. In addition, residents of the screen to make sure they are stable, non-violent and capable of caring for their basic needs.
The area has been so successful in its first year, officials say Lakeside, who want to duplicate. The house next door should open later this year, and two additional homes in the next three years. The goal is to have a total of 20 or more in 2020, which aims to provide housing to at least 100 people.
It is nice to read about this type of initiative nonprofit in the news occasionally. As a disability lawyer who sees many cases of mental disability, illness, I can not emphasize enough the importance of such environments for people with mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
