Manic depression is now known as bipolar affective disorder, a mood disorder of which there are millions of sufferers. Some people can go years without being diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder. Many do not seek professional help, such as laboratory tests need not be carried out, as for other diseases. 3 electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) – A treatment instead of medication to help those who severe depression or manic episodes. This therapy may also be given to those not responding to medication.

4 mood stabilizers – Medicine that may facilitate or delay to relieve depression and manic episodes.

ECT is only used as a therapy to help those who have symptoms of severe depression and mania. It is effective in reducing mood instability and cycling, and also helps symptoms mimimise bipolar disorder and side effects of the treatment administered. A bipolar patient can resume a normal life with a good management plan.

Bipolar affective disorder affects the person and their families, but we all need to remember that with proper treatment and good drugs, the disorder can be stabilized and controlled. Consult a doctor now.
