zyprexa bipolar disorder

What about people with bipolar disorder and have committed to a hospital?
My friend was diagnosed with bipolar disorder years ago and it is having a depressive episode. He is taking Zyprexa and Cymbalta and cuts and burns himself. He is always so tired, lost his job because he can not get out of bed most of the day. Unfortunately, I have never seen him this depressed. We have talked about suicide in the last couple of weeks and seems very concerned with death and death. Today I wondered if he should be in hospital and I think may be considering a voluntary commitment. We talked about it, but it seems very scary. What do people with bipolar disorder in a hospital?
I know someone who has bipolar and was admitted to the hospital this summer. Basically, doctors and nurses ensure that the patient was doing their basic needs such as sleep and feeding. Patients also attended self-help sessions with a trained professional. A psychiatrist met with each patient individually, because sometimes the daily assessments. The doctors had patients remain until they thought he was ready to go home. Follow-up appointments were made in the patent with counselors and physiatrists.
